ONE FAMILIES JOURNEY ::India to the Islands::
by Katalin Koda

Katalin & Yoko 09

Our family's journey from India to the Big Island of Hawaii has certainly been an adventure. First drawn here by friends we met in India, we felt it might be a fitting place for our family after living abroad for so many years. Indeed, Hawaii is tropical like India and even has a local Goddess, Tutu Pele, the guardian of the living volcano Kilauea.

Upon our landing, we circumnavigated the island checking everything out: the extraordinary active crater at Halema'uma'u; ancient and very recent lava fields that flow out in crumbly black chunks or twisted rope or longs smooth tongues; the turquoise and indigo ocean that is brimming with dolphins, colorful tropical fishes, sea turtles, vivid eels and brilliant sparkling coral; green plants of every hue and texture adorned with fruits, flowers and shining leaves; rainbows, rainbows, rainbows; craggy cliffs of emerald green; shimmering waterfalls.needless to say, to live in such a place is a Blessing indeed.

We found a little cabin style house right on the infamous Red Road, along the gorgeous Puna coast, backing up to a fantastic cliff where I watched the whales wintering, their haunting calls lulling us into sleep. In that way, so very different from India after all! Yoko Mojave attended a small preschool also on the Red Road where she made new friends, did loads of arts and crafts and learned fairy tales including the local Hawaiian tale of an eel abducting a small girl, then being rescued by the opihis (small mussel like animals that live on the coast here).

This fall Yoko will attend the local Hawaiian cultural immersion school where she will learn more of the native language, fishing seasons, hula, Hawaiian moons and how to make lahula mats. The spirits of the land are strong here-the 'io or hawk, honu the sea turtle and pueo the owl greet us many days along with tiny, sprite-like rainshowers, golden sun, pink clouds over a vast blue ocean and of course, the rainbows. So with much love and light, a warm Aloha!

DRILLING FOR HOPE
Reprint from "Mothering" Magazine
www.mothering.com

During times in our lives when we feel oppressed or dominated by others, it can be difficult to remain hopeful or to feel powerful. The early days and weeks of motherhood are one of those times. We love the baby madly, but mourn the loss of control over our own lives. In order to regain a semblance of control, we learn new attitudes and habits for tough times. -- More>>
